Brit airman who sank ‘The Bismarck’ dies at 93

A Second World War airman who took part in the raids that led to the eventual sincking of the German warship Bismarck has died at the age of 93.

Les Sayer flew in a 120mph part-fabric Swordfish biplane that crucially damaged the 50,000-ton vessel, the most feared in the world with eight 15-inch guns.

According to The Telegraph, Sayer was a telegraphist air gunner on the plane flown by Lieutenant Percy Gick when they found the warship in the North Atlantic in May 1941 after Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill had ordered: “Sink the Bismarck”.

Sir Winston ChurchillLondon, Aug 11 : He might have led Britain to victory in the Second World War, but the new history seems to have forgotten Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

A team of scholars working for TV’s History Channel compiled the list for a five-part television series called 50 Things You Need To Know About British History, but omitted the likes of Churchill, Queen Victoria, Florence Nightingale, Captain Cook and Sir Walter Raleigh from their list.

Though the list included Shakespeare, Charles Darwin, and explorer David Livingstone.

Handwritten letter by Churchill’s wife found in drugs raid

Sir Winston-ChurchillLondon, Aug 9 : A hand-written letter from the wife of Sir Winston Churchill has been found by police during a drugs raid at a house in Mexborough, South Yorkshire.

British officers found the letter and three cheques mounted on a card inside a plastic sleeve with a quantity of heroin.

The note from Clementine Churchill thanks a woman for making a donation to a Red Cross fund of which she was the president.

Police want to trace the owner of the letter, which is dated 1942.
