Pokhriyal seeks high-level probe in charges against Tiwari

Ramesh Pokhriyal, N D Tiwari Dehradun, Dec 29 : Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' Tuesday sought a high level probe into the charges levelled against veteran Congress leader N. D. Tiwari, who quit as Andhra Pradesh governor Saturday after allegations of his involvement in a sex scandal.

"Considering that such wild allegations have been levelled against a person who has always been held in high esteem, it would be in the fitness of things to get these probed," Pokhriyal told media persons here.

"Only a high level inquiry could determine whether the allegations were true or false... after all, transparency is important for people in public life and the only way one could get to the bottom of it is by getting a high level independent inquiry carried out," he added.

Tiwari, who arrived here Monday evening, flatly denied all the allegations in a brief interaction with media persons.

Terming the accusations as "part of a conspiracy", the 86-year-old leader said: "As far as my stepping down from office is concerned, let me tell you that I had already been wanting to do so because of health reasons."

"I have nothing whatsoever to do with the charges that have been levelled against me. This is a frame up and I can smell a conspiracy," he said.

Asked if he had plans to settle down here, Tiwari said: "In any case, I had to come back and settle down here."

"I will remain actively involved in public life and social work," he added.

Slogans of "Tiwari tum sangharsh karo, hum tumhare saath hain (Tiwari, you continue the struggle, we are with you)" by local Congress activists rent the air as Tiwari landed at the Jolly Grant airport here from Delhi where he earlier spent the day. His motorcade was accompanied by these supporters right until he reached the official bungalow allotted to him as former chief minister near the Forest Research Institute (FRI) here.

However, Tiwari preferred to remain indoors Tuesday. (IANS)
