The International Literacy Day 2009 was celebrated recently at the Rai Foundation’s Behror Campus, Rajasthan, that runs a scholarship scheme for underprivileged girls called ‘Gifted Girl and Girl Genius Scholarship’ (GGGS). About 800 girls from India and abroad are currently studying here. Underlining the importance of the occasion, the chief guest, Nimisha J. Madhvani, High Commissioner of Uganda to India, said it was a great opportunity for students from both India and abroad to learn together about their society and culture.

Speaking on literacy and empowerment, Madhvani lauded the initiative wherein underprivileged girl students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds hailing from India and abroad are provided Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes on full scholarships.

Rinchen Dolma, Campus Head, said she hoped that “this International Literacy Day, would provide an excellent opportunity to share experiences and formulate schemes to improve the quality of life of (our) people through education”.

Rai Foundation, an NGO with an objective to address various socio-cultural concerns of the country, works in the areas of women empowerment, public policy, healthcare, education and art and culture.
