Los Angeles  - The surging Boston Celtics extended one streak by putting an end to another.

The Celtics run is their longest since winning 14 in a row during the 1985-86 championship season.

Trailing by one with just under four minutes left before halftime, the reigning NBA Champions closed on a 14-0 run to take a 49-36 lead at the break.

Boston opened the second half with seven unanswered points as the gap widened to 56-36 at the 9:33 mark. During the 6 1/2 minute run, the Celtics' league-best defense forced the Trail Blazers to miss 12 consecutive shots.

"When you're in the midst of making a run, especially defensively, it's all flow and feel," Garnett said. "You can actually see the energy coming out of the team. For the most part, we were just locked in when we had to make stops."

Ahead 76-51, Rivers began to substitute freely, and Portland pulled to within 11. However, Garnett re-entered the game and slammed down a couple of dunks to restore order.

LaMarcus Aldridge and Travis Outlaw netted 13 points apiece for Portland (14-7) which is off to its best start in nine years.

"They're the world champions," said rookie centre Greg Oden, who fouled out with just five points and six rebounds in 18 minutes. "We came in here wanting to see where we're at, and we're not there yet."
