East Asia Summit partners support Nalanda varsity

Manmohan-SinghBandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), Oct 10 : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday thanked India's East Asia Summit partners for contributing to the setting up of the Nalanda University in Bihar as six countries began the process of signing inter-government agreements stating their commitment to this ambitious academic venture.

Academic sessions at the University are set to begin next year.

Anand-SharmaBandar Seri Begawan, Aug 21 : India Wednesday asked the US to participate in the manufacturing and research and development (R&D) sectors of its economy.

Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma met US Trade Representative Michael Froman in the Brunei capital and reviewed ongoing negotiations in the World Trade Oorganisation in view of the coming Bali ministerial meet in December.

They also discussed the future roadmap for concluding the Doha Development Agreement negotiations and issues of trade facilitation and food security.

Ministers of the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and their six regional partners (India, Japan, China, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand) discussed at the Brunei capital ways to proceed with negotiations on lowering and eliminating tariffs for the creation of one of the world's largest free trade blocs.

On Wednesday a 56-year-old man was hospitalized with severe injuries to his hand and shoulder he sustained after being attacked by a crocodile while washing his feet on the banks of the Kampong Benutan river.

Crocodile attacks are arguably on the rise in Brunei, with two crocodile-related deaths reported in September. Revenge killings are also on the rise.
