Prayers for martyrs on Tibetan New Year, says Dalai Lama

Dalai LamaDharamsala, Feb 7 : Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Saturday said those who laid down their lives fighting for a homeland would be remembered on the Tibetan New Year.

"Prayers for those dead people as well as those tortured who still live very painful lives and then some of them are being missing. So, we must pray for them," the Dalai Lama said before boarding a flight to Europe.

The Dalai Lama is on a four-day visit to Europe to receive award for his contribution to global peace and rights of Tibetans.

The Dalai Lama will visit Rome, Venice and Baden-Baden in Germany.

Rehabilitation home for women in Himachal Pradesh(HP), Jan 27 : A rehabilitation home for neglected women has been set up by the Department of Welfare and Social Justice of Himachal Pradesh State Government.

Thanks to home named Nari Seva Sadan (Help centre for women) at Mashobra, 22 kilometres away from Shimla, the way is paved for such neglected women to return to the mainstream of society.

20 migratory birds found dead in DharamsalaDharamsala (Himachal Pradesh), Jan. 25 : Forest Department authorities in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, have found the carcasses of about twenty migratory birds.

The dead birds included 18 Bar-headed Goose and two Ruddy Shell Ducks that had flocked around the Pong Dam for their winter break.

While the specific reasons for their death are yet to be ascertained, the concerned authorities of Wildlife and Veterinary Department suspect that either it is a case of bird-flu or poisoning.

Shimla, Jan 21 : People living in the upper reaches in Himachal Pradesh, which gets heavy snowfall during the winters have devised a unique method of storing meat by drying it and smearing it with spices to prevent it from putrefying.

The roads to these hilly areas are blocked due to heavy snowfall during winter. Therefore people in Himachal Pradesh start collecting their food well in advance.

"There are two months of extreme cold, we chop the meat and store it in cold places. We get the ration for winters. We eat it with the dry meat in winters which is also good to eat," said Sardar Singh, a villager.
