1 in 5 Aussies unfit to be a parent, says expert

Melbourne, September 28 : One in five Australian parents is ‘unfit’ to be a parent, says leading child-health expert Professor Fiona Stanley.

Owing to either excessive professional commitment or lack of parenting skills, or simply the lack of means, the health of future children is bound to suffer.

"There are a worrying number of threats to children''s health in society today,” News. com. au quoted the expert as saying.

"If we don''t respond to these challenges ... we will be looking at our generation, my generation, as being the last generation that lives longer than its parents,” she added.

Couch potatoes have bigger appetites than brisk walkers!

Melbourne, Sept 26: Sitting around all morning on the couch, not a brisk walk or a jog, is the ‘best’ way to work up an appetite for a big meal, says a shocking new study.

According to researchers, from Massachusetts and Missouri Universities, sitting increases hunger.

In a study, billed as ''the first to examine whether too much sitting alters our perception of hunger'', the researchers monitored the appetite of young men and women asked to be active or inactive for a day at a time.

During active days, the volunteers spent 12 hours on the go.

Although they did not take part in any sports, they walked and did housework and could only sit down for 10 minutes in every hour, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Future UK royal daughters may be heirs to throne

Melbourne, Sept 25 : Even if Prince Williams’ first-born child is a daughter, she would be the heir to the throne, if new amendments to England’s constitution come into effect.

Earlier the successor to the throne had to be a male member of the Royal family.

Ending the 300-year-old exclusion of Catholics from the throne, Downing Street has drawn up plans to review the constitution.

Chris Bryant, the MP who was charged by Gordon Brown with reviewing the constitution, is drafting the plans, reports Guardian. co. uk.

The proposals also include limiting the powers of the Privy Council, in particular its role as arbiter in disputes between Scotland or Wales and the UK government.

Here’s how you can bring back the joy in your job

Melbourne, Sept 25 : Feeling trapped in your job? Well, in that case, stop fretting, for here are few ways to help you fall back in love with work.

Psychologist Dr Timothy Sharp, who calls himself ''Mr Happy'' and teaches people how to get more enjoyment out of their work, has offered the tips to make you feel good while working.

"Not everyone will be 100 per cent happy 100 per cent of the time," News. com. au quoted Dr Sharp, as saying.

Bunk beds should carry danger warnings, says expert

Melbourne, Sept 24 : Bunk beds should carry a danger warning and must never be in the same room as a ceiling fan, urges an expert.

The researchers from Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit have found that nearly one in 10 cases of bunk-related injuries had a child being struck by a ceiling fan while on the top bunk, thereby resulting in severe cuts to the head that required surgery.

The data revealed that about 20 per cent of cases required hospital admission - and in three cases, children aged 2, 3 and 7, survived after falling off a bunk bed and out of window.

The researchers have identified 1020 cases in the nine years from 1999 to 2007.

Rangers end terror reign of pig that held Oz community hostage!

Melbourne, Sept 24 : A pig, with a huge appetite for destruction and bananas, was finally captured after it terrorised a small community near Uki in northern New South Wales.

According to the Courier Mail, Bruce, aka Pigzilla, who had moved in and taken over a small farm outside Uki in recent weeks, was captured by rangers from the Rural Land Protection Board.

Now, the giant porker will be shipped off to a piggery at a secret location where several sows are already waiting for him.

Bruce was caught after making Caroline Hayes, 63, a prisoner in her own home by bailing her up inside the farmhouse until she fed him.

Hayes had been reduced to feeding the hungry porker dozens of bananas to placate him.
