Andhra Pradesh, Goa assemblies to begin their budget sessionsHyderabad/Panaji, Feb 2 : The budget sessions of the Andhra Pradesh and Goa Assemblies are to be held from today.

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly will kick start its ten-day session with Governor N. D Tiwari''s address to a joint sitting of members of Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.

Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister K. Rosaiah will present a vote on account on February 5 to support the government''s moves to draw necessary funds till the completion of assembly elections.

Goa protests for removal of grounded ship

Goa, PanajiPanaji (Goa), Jan 26, : Agnelo Fernandes, Goa's Congress legislator, was arrested on Monday along with 200 other supporters for taking out a march demanding the removal of a grounded cango ship.

The cargo ship had run aground in north Goa's candolim shore in June 2000.

River Princess Hatao Manch, a non-governmental organization (NGO), has been agitating in the state demanding removal of the ship, which could cause ecological disaster due to high erosion of sand.

Three arrested for sexually abusing minor girl in Goa

Goa, PanajiPanaji (Goa), Jan 24, : Three young persons, including one Police constable, were arrested for allegedly raping a minor in Khandola village in Goa.

Indian Reserve Battalion's Police constable, Shamba alias Dipak Jhalmi and two of his accomplices, Paresh Saju Gaude and Sanjay Rama Jhalmi were arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting a fifteen-year-old minor for over three months.

Police inspector Manjunath Desai said the girl had complained that the accused had sexually abused her on several occasions at different places in and around the village.

Modernisation necessary as India is surrounded by inimical elements: Antony

A K AntonyPanaji, Jan 21 : Defence Minister AK Antony today said the Union Government has decided to modernize the armed forces and Coast Guards rapidly as the country is surrounded by too many elements inimical to India.

Addressing a gathering here during the commissioning of the Indian Coast Guards fast patrol vessel "Samrat", Antony said: "We know very well that what we have is not enough. This is less than 30 per cent of the capability we require."

"Our armed forces must be in the state of preparedness always," he added.

Christmas spirit lives on in Goa

Numerous cribs in various sizes depicting Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, the three kings, sheep and camels, set against a backdrop of a manger adorn the houses, churches across the state.

For the Catholic families, the tradition of crib making is as special as the festivity of the Christmas.
