Chamling sworn in as Sikkim CM for record fifth time

Pawan-Kumar-ChamlingGangtok, May 21 : Pawan Kumar Chamling was Wednesday sworn in as Sikkim's chief minister for a record fifth consecutive time.

Governor Shriniwas Patil administered the oath of office to 63-year-old Chamling and 11 ministers at a function at Raj Bhawan here.

The Chamling-led Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) had secured a two-thirds majority in the assembly elections winning 22 seats out of 32.

On Tuesday, Chamling was elected the SDF Legislature Party leader, after which the governor invited him to form the government.

Pawan-ChamlingGangtok, May 17 : With fifth consecutive win in assembly elections, Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling is set to become the longest serving chief minister in India, breaking Jyoti Basu's record of 23 years.

Chamling-led Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) won two-thirds majority in the assembly elections, the results for which were announced Friday. The SDF won 22 of the 32 seats.

Sixtyfour-year-old Chamling has already completed more than 20 years as the Sikkim chief minister. With the new mandate, he can rule the state for five more years. That will make him the longest serving chief minister in Independent India.

A total of 362,326 voters, including 175,549 women, are eligible to cast their ballot.

Just six candidates are in the fray.

As many as 24.62 percent of the voters are in the age group of 18-25.

Balloting is taking place at 538 polling booths across the state.

Under the agreement, trade takes place four days a week - Monday to Thursday - beginning May each year and lasting until Nov 30 when snow makes the area impassable.

"We had been to the spot and we tried our level best to save by tranquillising the animal. But, there were so many other effects that the animal could not be controlled in such a way. That is why, two of our officials have been injured and one of them is in a serious condition,” said H. P Pradhan, Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF), Department of Forests.
