Srinagar remains tense, Election Commission to discuss on J-K poll schedule

election commissionNew Delhi/Srinagar, Sept 8 : The Election Commission on Monday will hold a meeting of all political parties of Jammu and Kashmir to determine the timing of the State Assembly elections.

The Commission has decided to assess the situation in New Delhi after doubts were expressed whether polls could be held in the wake of the recent violence in the state.

Killing of a youth sparks off fresh clashes in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, Sept 7 : The Kashmir Valley was tense on Sunday following fresh clashes between security forces and protesters in the wake of a youth being killed in police firing.

Police had to fire teargas shells and had to baton charge stone-pelting mobs in Srinagar. State Government authorities had to deploy both police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in strength to maintain law and order.

The clashes took place in the Maisuma locality, which is in the heart of the city. Areas like Red Cross, Kokerbazar, Madina Chowk and Nai Sadak were also affected, official sources said.

One killed during protests in Indian Kashmir Srinagar, India  - Violence broke out in India-administered Kashmir after a two-week lull on Saturday, with the death of a demonstrator when police fired to disperse protestors.

The police said they fired to disperse a mob of protestors who pelted stones at security forces personnel in the old quarters of Jammu and Kashmir state capital Srinagar. Two people were injured and admitted to hospital.

Separatists call for a shutdown in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, Sept 6: The Coordination committee of both the factions of Hurriyat Conference on Saturday called for a shutdown in the Kashmir Valley.

Residents said that the shutdown call has been given against the indecisiveness of the Jammu and Kashmir Government over the shrine land transfer controversy.

Shops, business establishments, educational institutions and banks remained closed in observance of the shutdown call.

"We are observing this shutdown so that our voice reaches the higher authorities, we want that attention should be paid towards us and that is why the coordination committee has called for a shutdown," said Fayaz Ahmed, a resident.

J-K Muslim League chairman arrested

Kashmir tense during memorial for slain separatist leader Srinagar, Sept 4 : The chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League Masrat Alam was arrested by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of local police from Haft Chinar area here today, the sources said.

According to reports, Alam was travelling in an autorickshaw and was overpowered by the SOG personnel who had been following him. After arrest he was taken to a nearby Air Cargo detention centre.
