Authorities launch massive drive to conserve Dal LakeLakes and Waterways Development officials have initiated a massive drive against the houseboat owners and hoteliers around Dal Lake, who are allegedly polluting the lake by discharge of liquid and human waste.

Acting on the directives of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, the authorities have directed to stop the operations of hotels, houseboats and commercial units as mentioned in the state pollution board's report filed on January 31.

SrinagarSrinagar, Kashmir - At least 39 people were killed and 14 injured Wednesday when a bus skidded off a mountain road and fell into a river in India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The accident occurred when the driver of the bus lost control while taking a sharp turn on the road at Pul Doda in Doda district, about
180 kilometres north-east of the state's winter capital, Jammu.

The bus fell 90 metres into the Neeru Nullah, a tributary of the Chenab River, an official at the police control room in Jammu said.

KashmirSrinagar, Feb 24 : Protestants have forced a shutdown in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, following the mysterious death of a youth in the Parimpora area of Srinagar.

The police recovered the body of Shabir Ahmad Shiekh, a resident of Maisuma, from Shairefabad in Parimpora area at the outskirts of the city on Tuesday morning.

Sheikh had not returned to his home till late. After much search, he was found strangulated.

The body was then taken to the police control room for post-mortem.

Sopore Police registers murder case against Army

Srinagar, Feb 22 : A local police station at Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir has registered an FIR under section 302 against the Army, in connection with a firing incident on Saturday in which two youths were killed and another one was critically injured.

Twenty two Rashtriya Rifles battalion of the Army is alleged to have opened indiscriminate fire, without any provocation, on a group of people who were part of a festival of a revered Saint''s shrine in Bomai.

The firing has claimed the lives of Mohammad Amin Tantray of Bomai-Sopore and Javid Ahmad of Muslimpeer-Sopore and has injured one Firdous Ahmad.
