Two more live bombs found in Surat

Surat, July 29: Surat Police today recovered two more live bombs, two days after serial bomb blasts killed over 40 people in Ahmedabad.

According to police officials, one bomb was found near the Labheshwar Police Chowki in the city''s Varachha area, while the second bomb was found in Santoshi Nagar.

The bomb disposal squad are at the site looking for further clues.

On Monday, three live bombs were defused in Surat.

Meanwhile, Ahmedabad Police and officials of other investigative agencies are coming around to the view that the banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) could be behind this latest attack

Diamonds may not sparkle in Surat

diamondSurat (Gujarat), June 17 : The current recession has had its impact on world markets and raw diamonds have crippled the once shimmering diamond cutting industry of Surat in Gujarat.

The situation is turning precarious with the existing diamond cutting units struggling to survive.

Thousands of workers engaged in the cutting and polishing of diamonds in Surat are compelled to explore other means to arrange for their daily bread.

Out of the total export of rupees 80, 000 crores (800 billion rupees) from India, the cut and polished diamonds from Surat account for rupees 45,000 crores (450 billion rupees).

Repro India to setup printing unit at Surat SEZ

Mumbai-based Repro India Ltd has informed that the company is setting up a printing unit in a special economic zone at Surat. The company is in the process of acquisition of the property and the necessary procedural formalities for the commencement of production at new location.

Repro India Limited operates as an integrated print solution company in India. The company’s clients in the educational printing segment include publishers like Orient Longman, Egmont Imagination, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Oxford University Press, Jeevandeep Publications, and others.

The company also engages in the replication of software CD's, and stock management activities.

14 crushed to death by train near Surat

Surat, Feb 28: At least 14 people were crushed to death by a train in Udhna District late on Wednesday night, Railway Police said.

The accident occurred in South Kankrakhadi in Udhna, which is about three km from Surat, at around 11 p. m. on Wednesday.

The driver of another train spotted the dead that included two women and two children.

The driver of train, 'Flying Rani', which runs between Surat and Mumbai, immediately informed the Railway authorities of the accident, Railway Police Inspector H M Patel said.

Investigations are on to determine the cause of the accident. (ANI)

Major fire engulfs a chemical factory in SuratSurat (Gujarat), Feb 13: A major fire broke out at a chemical factory in Surat in the early hours of Wednesday, causing huge losses.

The incident occurred at the Amol Metallic Company in Udhana in Surat, which manufactures photo film coating chemicals.

At least 20 fire engines were rushed to the site to douse the flames.

Authorities said that though no casualties were reported the fire caused huge loss to property.

"There is no loss of life, and nearby residential slum has been evacuated,' said Mahesh Singh, a civic administration official.
