Surat, Feb 25: A team of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officials interacted with diamond merchants here on Tuesday to assess their trade potential and provide them a solution to overcome their present plight of reeling under global recession.
Thousands of small diamond cutting and polishing units are located in and around Surat.
Reportedly, over a hundred thousands of workers had lost their jobson account of the recessionary trends all over Gujarat.
Reeling under severe problems of liquidity, the diamond merchants demanded that the RBI officials must solve their problem and provide financial stability.
Surat, Feb 22: Without naming Congress Party''s General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has accused the Central leadership of attempting to scuttle the proposed Tata''s Nano car project from the State.
"Government in Delhi finds it difficult to digest development in Gujarat. In particular, some people want to undo the Nano project in Gujarat. I want to tell them that even if the entire army from Delhi is deployed, it will not be able to scuttle the project," Modi said while addressing a public meeting on Saturday.
Surat, Feb 14, : Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Saturday visited the diamond workers here and said the Central Government is committed to work for poor.
"The Congress Party believes in the common man and the poor of this country and over the last five years, we have done more than any government to help the common man," Gandhi said.
On the last day of his three-days visit to Gujarat, Gandhi was meeting with diamond workers in Surat, which has been hit by global recession in recent times.

A group of diamond workers had queued outside the office of ''Surat Diamond Association'' today to get the application forms for special package announced by the Diamond Association, which offered them a waiver in the school fees of their children.
The long wait and subsequent shortage of forms angered the workers and soon erupted into a protest by them outside the office building.
