Washington  - In a shocking development that plunged the United States back into uncertainty Monday, the US House of Representatives rejected a massive government plan to rescue the economy from the brink of financial meltdown.

The House voted 228-205 against the bill. Republicans led the opposition, voting 2-1 against the 700-billion-dollar bail-out plan. There was a small possibility the bill could come up again with some new amendments included.

Washington  - The United States is sending its top negotiator with North Korea to Pyongyang this week to break an impasse in implementing the nuclear disarmament agreement, the State Department said Monday.

US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill is due to arrive in Seoul on Tuesday and later in Beijing for discussions with his South Korea and Chinese counterparts before heading to North Korea.

But an investigation that once seemed of interest only to Alaskans has taken on much greater significance with her presence on the Republican presidential ticket, the CBS News reports. 

At the Alaska Legislative Building in downtown Anchorage on Friday, the hearing room was ready for seven state employees subpoenaed to testify. But no one showed up. 

The inquiry into Palin''s firing of the head of the state police began with her promising full cooperation.

Washington - Congress on Sunday was on the threshold of sealing a controversial 700-billion-dollar bailout deal intended to pull the US back from the edge of a financial meltdown.

The measure, which is intended to thaw out frozen credit lines with a government purchase of toxic mortgage assets and securities, could go for a vote as early as Monday.

Conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives were still waiting to see the final draft written by staffers who worked through the night, but they indicated they had oral agreement on some of their demands that Wall Street carry more of the plan's burden.
