RIL may be eyeing the nuclear energy biz

RIL may be eyeing the nuclear energy bizAfter creating a lot of ripple with their plans of entering the telecom and power business, the latest one to do the rounds is the nuclear energy business.

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) sees huge potential in the sector and wants to make the most out of it before more players come into the market.

And now that the non-compete agreement between the two brothers is over, RIL is free to enter any sector it wants to. Talking to a private newspaper, ET, a government official on condition of anonymity said, "RIL has indicated to the government that it is keen on generation and distribution of nuclear power."

There are rumors that these plans are still in the preliminary stages and that it is in talks with a US-based engineering, construction company, Bechtel Corporation.

It is said that Bechtel is carrying out a feasibility study of the nuclear energy sector in India.

Post the Indo-US nuclear deal, many public and private companies are eyeing the sector. But, as per the existing laws the Central government needs to have 51 per cent stake in any project that comes up.
