Saradha agents lay siege to CM Mamata’s residence

Saradha agents lay siege to CM Mamata’s residenceMore than 3,000 agents of Saradha Group on Friday laid siege to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence as part of their protest against the lockdown of the chit fund-based media group.

Seize was laid after a 33-year-old agent of Saradha Group committed suicide, citing inability to repay his depositors' money.

Saradha Group that flourished at a surprising rate using chit funds over the past few years recently went bust, leaving thousands of its agents and investors in the lurch.

Saradha Group CMD Sudipta Sen is still at large, and the state police's Intelligence Branch has sent messages to all police units, demanding arrest of Sen. But, the police has so far failed to detect Sen's location.

Using chit funds, Saradha Group launched numerous media entities in 2010, including Channel 10 (now called Rice group), Bengal Post, the Seven Sisters Post and Azad Hind. Sen, with the help of agents, raised massive amounts of money from the public as advances, but did not make any repayment.

Now, as Sen and his family members are absconding, the agents are struggling to repay the money to the angry depositors. Leaders from rural areas have liabilities over Rs 20 crore.

Inability to repay his angry depositors forced one of the distressed agents to hang himself to death in Durgapur.

Earlier, depositors ransacked Saradha Group offices at several different locations, including Baruipur, Goghat, East Midnapore and Murshidabad, indicating that the flames of angry depositors are spreading across the state.
