SC asks Sahara to clear whether it will repay Rs 27cr to investors

SC asks Sahara to clear whether it will repay Rs 27cr to investorsSahara group on Tuesday will declare in Supreme Court whether it would comply with the apex court's order to refund Rs 27,000 crore, which it had collected in violation of SEBI rules, to its investors.

On Monday, the Supreme Court had given 24 hours time to Sahara group to clear its stance on the issue.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir refused to accept the group's readiness to deposit Rs 5,126 crore, and bluntly asked whether the two Sahara group companies, viz. Sahara India Real Estate Corp Ltd (SIRECL) and Sahara Housing Investment Corp Ltd (SHICL), would be able to repay the whole amount to their investors within a week or not.

The bench said, "Your intention is very shaky. Your every step is shaky; we can't interpret our order according to your need. Tell us by tomorrow (Tuesday) whether you are ready to pay up or face the music."

The bench rebuked senior advocate Gopal Subramaniam, who appeared for one of the two Sahara companies, saying he was trying to justifying the conduct that was not justifiable.

Capital market regulator SEBI, which has already filed a contempt petition against the Sahara group, also opposed the companies' plea saying there was a need to take a strong action against the companies.

Around three months back, the apex court had ordered the Sahara group companies to refund Rs 24,000 crore along with an annual interest of 15 per cent to their three crore investors.
