Sen. Ted Cruz urges lawmakers to hold hearing about Second Amendment rights on military bases

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is urging lawmakers to allow troops to carry personal firearms on military bases for protection.

In an interview Tuesday, Cruz said, "Now, I will acknowledge, I may have misspoken in New Hampshire when I said that I had been pressing John McCain, and what I had been pressing was the Armed Services Committee. John McCain is the new chairman of it, so I sent a letter to the previous chairman".

In a gathering in Litchfield, New Hampshire on Sunday, Cruz said he has spoken to Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican and chairman of the committee and asked him for a Senate Committee on Armed Services hearing. He wants to have the hearing so that the issue of denying soldiers the ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights can be discussed.

However, McCain said that he has referred the issue to the personnel subcommittee, which will take action if they want to.

Mr. McCain told reporters Tuesday that although the hearing is important, input of military is required as they are they are the ones who are directly affected by this. He mentioned that he can't make up his mind until he hears from the United States military.

On Tuesday, many lawmakers said that they were open to having a discussion on changing the rules the hearing. However, most of them said that that they would adjourn issues of base security to military leaders.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who chairs the personnel subcommittee said that he would get the hearing scheduled in order to let the military speak on how their security can be affected with a chance in rule.
