SEZs will not be thrust upon Goa: Kamal Nath

Union Minister Kamal NathNew Delhi, Jan 3 : Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath today assured Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat that the Centre would not thrust any Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in the state and all SEZs in the state including the notified ones will be reviewed.

"The Central Government does not want to thrust upon any state SEZ which is not conducive," Nath told reporters here.

Talking about the three notified SEZs, he said: "There is absolute provision in the (SEZ) Act for everything."

After the Goa Government decided to scrap all SEZs in the state, on Wednesday, Union Commerce Secretary G K Pillai had said: "The SEZs that have been notified have become legal entities and cannot be denotified."

The State Government faced a tough time last week with anti-SEZ protestors intensifying their movement.

There have been protests against SEZs in several states, including West Bengal, Maharashtra and Haryana, but Goa is the first Congress-ruled state to have gone back on the SEZ policy. (ANI)
