Six die amid floods in north-eastern Czech Republic

Six die amid floods in north-eastern Czech RepublicPrague - At least six people died overnight amid floods in northeastern Czech Republic, police said Thursday.

Four people were confirmed to have drowned, and two others died, although the cause of death had not yet been ascertained, police spokeswoman Miroslava Michalkova Salkova told the German Press Agency dpa.

"We can't rule out that there will be more victims," she said.

The victims lived nearby northeastern town of Novy Jicin, an area which has been hit the hardest by the floods.

Michalkova Salkova said that in one village waters rose as high as 7 metres above ordinary levels, flooding several houses up to roofs.

Heavy rains fed local floods elsewhere in eastern Czech Republic.

Dozens of people had to be evacuated overnight in the Olomouc region, the CTK news agency reported citing local firefighters.

Four railroad links in the country's east had to be closed owing to high waters, including a portion of the main route connecting Austria and the Czech Republic to Poland, Czech Railways spokesman Petr Stahlavsky told dpa.

The Czech Republic's Security Council is to meet in an extraordinary session on Thursday, premier's office said. (dpa)
