Six vehicle thieves held in ChandigarhChandigarh, Dec 9 : Six people, including a woman, were arrested and 21 stolen two-wheelers recovered as police Wednesday claimed to have busted a gang of vehicle thieves.

According to police, the alleged kingpin of the gang Roshan Sharma, a native of Solan in Himachal Pradesh, and his female accomplice Laxmi Pushpekar were held in sector-45 here.

The bike they were riding was found to be a stolen one with a fake registration number.

"The couple used to steal two-wheelers from Chandigarh and the neighbouring areas. Then after procuring fake registration certificates and insurance papers, they sold the vehicles in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and other areas," S. S. Srivastava, senior superintendent of police, told reporters.

"After their interrogation, police arrested four other members of the gang. So far we have recovered 21 two-wheelers worth around Rs. 14 lakh (Rs. 1.4 million) from them," he said.

Besides Sharma and Pushpekar, police have arrested Hemant Kumar, Baljinder Singh, Sonu and Sanjay (all residents of Chandigarh).

"Baljinder used to make fake registration certificates for the stolen vehicles while Hemant provided them blank forms of insurance cover of various nationalised companies. We are expecting to recover 60 more two-wheelers from them," said a police official.    (IANS)
