Spanish court to investigate relations between ETA and FARC

Madrid  - Prosecutors at Spain's top anti-terrorism National Court have opened a preliminary investigation into possible links between the militant Basque separatist group ETA and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Spanish media reported Tuesday.

Prosecutors have requested urgent information from the Colombian government, which said recently that FARC sought contacts with ETA five years ago in order to stage attacks against Colombian politicians or personalities visiting or living in Madrid.

The eventual targets included former president Andres Pastrana and Vice-President Francisco Santos.

The information is based on e-mails found in the computer of Raul Reyes, the second-in-command of the FARC, who was killed in an air raid by Colombian troops on March 1.

The e-mails referred to the presence of ETA members at FARC training camps and identified Colombians who could be targeted in Madrid, according to National Court prosecutor Javier Zaragoza.

The court has also requested a thorough report from Spanish police on the past and present relations between ETA and FARC, including the possible presence of FARC members at acts organized by groups linked to ETA. (dpa)
