As per the media reports, the interim government in Fiji is being forced to have a word with unions before it goes ahead with redundancy packages for public servants.

This week saw the Public Service Commission announcing that it is mulling to cut the number of public servants by another 20%, as a part of reforms to be completed by next year.

In the month of April, approximately 2500 public servants were made to retire; after their retirement age was lowered to 55.

According to the commission, it is mulling to cut another 6000 jobs, and staff will be asked to take voluntary retirement.

However, it was clarified by general secretary Attar Singh no information regarding any redundancy proposals has been given to unions.
