Tata Power temporarily shuts Mundra plant

Tata PowerPrivate-sector power producer Tata Power Co. has confirmed that its 4,000 MW western India plant, which recently suffered a fire accident, has been temporarily shut.

The Mundra plant's conveyor gallery suffered fire at 4.30 am on 14th of November when it was generating 3,040 MW of electricity from four units. The plant's No. 2 unit had already been under shut down for the examination of generator at the time of the accidental fire.

Conveyor belts are used to carry coal from one place to another at such plants. As the fire broke at the conveyor gallery, coal could no longer be transported to feed the boilers, which forced the plant to stop power generation from all the five units.

Currently the plant is getting the required repairs.

In a recently released statement, the country's biggest private-sector power producer said, "At this stage, immense importance is placed on measures to deal with this incident and the conveyor repair work is in progress."

The state of Gujarat, which buys nearly 50 per cent of the total electricity generated by the plant, has been hit the most by the shutdown. States like Maharashtra, Punjab and Haryana are also suffering the brunt of the shutdown.

The company also announced that the plant would likely resume electricity generation on 24th of November and start supplying power to buyers by 3rd of December this year.
