Three teenagers arrested in smash-and-grab heist at London jewelry stores

ArrestedIt has been reported that three teenagers were arrested Thursday on suspicion of involvement in a smash-and-grab heist at two London jewelry stores.

Sky News has reported that investigators say the thieves got away with $1.5 million in diamonds and other jewelry from De Beers and Tiffany stores in the Westfield Shopping Center. The break-in at the mall, described as the largest in Europe, occurred early Wednesday.

Police said that the three suspects, ages 15, 17 and 18, were all found at the same address in the London neighborhood of Camden Town.

One of the three getaway cars believed to have been used in the heist has also been recovered, investigators said.

Police further said that the robbery was carried out quickly. A team of up to 10 people used crowbars to break open fire doors and then smashed their way into the two jewelry stores. They set off alarms but were out of the mall before police responded.

De Beers CEO Francois Delage told The Times of London, "This is an unfortunate incident but is yet another reminder of the timeless allure of diamonds." (With Inputs from Agencies)
