Tokyo says Olympics bid boosted by IOC report

Tokyo says Olympics bid boosted by IOC report Tokyo  - Tokyo feels its bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games has been boosted by an International Olympic Committee (IOC) evaluation report, its bid committee chief said Thursday.

"We are extremely pleased to receive such a high evaluation," Japanese Olympic Committee president Tsunekazu Takeda said at a press conference in Tokyo.

"We feel convinced that this is a big boost towards our goal of hosting the Games."

An evaluation report released Wednesday assessed the technical bids of the four candidate cities - Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo - a month before the IOC votes in Copenhagen on October 2 on the 2016 hosts.

Tokyo, bidding to host the summer Olympics for the first time since 1964, received praise for its vision and concept to stage a compact games, efficient public transport, and financial guarantees.

However the report mentioned a lukewarm interest from the Japanese public (54 per cent) for the Games, while noting that some facilities which were said to exist still have to be built.

Takeda said the public support rate mentioned in the report was from a survey made in February and had since risen considerably. The bid committee would be showing that the Japanese people were passionate about the Olympics, he said. (dpa)
