Mamata-BanerjeeAizawl, April 19 : The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is expanding its base in the northeastern region. The party set up a unit Friday in the Congress-ruled Mizoram.

The TMC has already set up its state units in Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, and fought various elections in these states.

"Names of the leaders of a full fledged Mizoram state committee would be announced soon by our party supremo Mamata Banerjee," TMC's Manipur unit president Kim Gangte told reporters here Friday.

Former Lok Sabha member from Manipur, Gangte, who held a day-long meeting in Aizawl with the possible leaders and workers of the TMC in Mizoram, said: "The party would contest the 40-seat Mizoram assembly elections this year-end."

Retired Indian Police Service officer B. T. Nghinglova and Trinamool leaders from Manipur and many political leaders and workers have attended the meetings.

Nghinglova is the most likely candidate for the post of president of the Mizoram unit of Trinamool. (IANS)
