Vancouver to expand its recycling program

Vancouver to expand its recycling programAuthorities in the City of Vancouver are expanding recycling program that will now allow the residents to throw their food scraps in the green bin.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson announced the expansion of the project on Tuesday while demonstrating how to scrape all food. The residents will now be able to dispose their food wastes including meat, fat, bones, dairy, uncooked fruit and vegetables, tea, coffee and eggshells in their green bins from plates into the green bin.

While announcing the expansion of the pilot project in the city, Robertson said, "Everybody needs to step up and be more responsible with their waste. It needs to happen with all our organic materials."

The pilot project included about 2,000 homes in Sunrise and Riley Park neighborhoods. The new pogramme that covers the whole city diverts organic waste and compost from landfill sites. It is a part of the government's plan to ban all organic material from landfill sites by 2015 in a larger Metro Vancouver area.

The government is aiming to reduce the garbage pickup schedules and curbside garbage pickup will collect garbage on a biweekly basis while green bins will continue to be picked up weekly from the spring of the next year.
