Verizon acquires AOL

Verizon is looking forward to grow in mobile video and advertising segment by buying AOL, the Internet's oldest brand. Verizon sold its mobile phones to millions of Americans. Verizon's phone business is not performing according to its expectations.

AOL is the owner of Denver-based digital mapping company MapQuest; it was considered as the go-to map by desktop PC users who examined how to move from Point A to Point B. According to Nielsen, a market research firm that tracks Web traffic, MapQuest is ranked third for travel sites. MapQuest employs about 70 people in Denver.

According to Luke Beatty, AOL's president of independent brands, another dozen people are employed at corporate AOL in Denver, in addition to some reporters for The Huffington Post. Its independent brands include online publications HuffPost, TechCrunch and Engadget.

According to Beatty, "This Verizon acquisition is awesome and big news for AOL and the Denver AOL folks. The Denver office, as well as every other location and their related brands, are full-speed ahead, invigorated by this acquisition".

According to media analyst Ken Doctor, Verizon is offering less services; the company just offers access to online services. He said that the company is making efforts to make money from digital services. Last year, AT&T said that it would acquire satellite TV provider DirecTV for $48.5 billion in order that it could offer TV, Internet and phone services, similar to cable companies.

There was 7% increase in AOL's revenue during its first quarter, mostly on strong global advertising sales.

Lauren Fisher, analyst at eMarketer said that the company's target on combining the advertising experience is a good thing as advertisers are looking for better ways to reach their audience.
