Walmart enters multi-brand retail segment; wants government to change its stand
Walmart said on Tuesday that it is ready to go for multi-brand retailing in India. The time it requires would be one year and the retail giant is eagerly waiting for the government decision on the issue of FDI, to be able to go ahead with its plans.
Walmart is the world's biggest retailer and has come to India through its collaboration with Bharti Group.
Talking to the press about this new development to the press, Raj Jain, President of Walmart India said the main roadblock in its plans is the government decision. It is waiting for the government to allow FDI in the multi-brand retailing.
Once that is done, he says, and then Bharti-Walmart could easily gear itself up and start new outlets within months.
Jain further added that liberalized FDI norms are important for the company. But, he added that a change is going to be equally good for the sector as well.
Jain said that the supply chain of the company is getting ready for the multi-brand retailing concept.
But as Bharti-Walmart looks with hope towards the government to change its stand; Anand Sharma, the Minister of Trade says that there would be no change in the FDI norms.
