Women launch new protest against Posco projectHundreds of angry villagers including large number of women staged a new protect against the presence of police at Gobindapur village in Jagatsinghpur district, which has been deployed to speed up the process of land acquisition work for the Posco Project.

Several villagers walked in protest to the police camps at Mangalapada and demanded that the police forces are removed from the site. The protest led to a clash between the police and this left 20 villagers injured. Interestingly, it was the first protest where some of the women were protesting semi-nude claiming that their demands have not been heard before.

S K Mallick, the Collector for Jagatsinghpur blamed the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) used for using women protestors as a shield to prevent police officers from entering Mangalapada. SP for Jagatsinghpur, Satyabrata Bhoi claimed the police only dispersed the villagers when they marched towards the police camp using batons.

PPSS president Abhay Sahoo said that the actions of the police must be condemned and expressed that the incidence shows what the state government thinks about democratic demonstrations. The government has said that it has acquired around 2000 acre and needs another 700 acre in order to allow the South Korean steel giant to begin the phase one of the project.
