CFDA orders statewide recall of raw milk produced by Organic Pastures Dairy of Fresno

The California Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) has called for a statewide recall of raw milk produced by milk Organic Pastures Dairy of Fresno. The step has been taken following a quarantine order after the discovery of campylobacter bacteria in some of the company’s milk.

On Friday, the CDFA reported that so far no reports of illnesses have come from people consuming the affected milk.

As per the recall order, Organic Pastures Dairy’s grade-A, raw milk having a code date of ‘October 24’ on the containers have to be pulled from store shelves. Consumers have been urged to dispose of any of this milk if present in their refrigerators.

No specifications have been given by the state officials regarding which stores have this brand of milk or to what parts of the state the milk may have been transported.

The agency reported that the CDFA discovered the bacteria during a normal testing of the company’s milk.

A CDFA press release said most of people with campylobacteriosis recover fully and that its symptoms generally occur two to five days after getting exposed to campylobacter and lasts for seven days. It added that the symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. At times, people exposed to the bacteria don’t show any symptoms.

The release continues, “However, in some persons with compromised immune systems, it can cause a serious, life-threatening infection. A small percentage of people may have joint pain and swelling after infection”. It mentioned that exposed person can suffer from a rare disease known as Guillain-Barre syndrome that causes weakness and paralysis, a few weeks after the initial illness.
