2024 Hyundai Kona Electric with smaller battery option costs same as larger battery variant
The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric subcompact crossover SUV is available in two battery variants, yet interestingly, both are available at the same price point. It could be a game-changer in the automotive landscape by introducing two battery variants while maintaining an enticing pricing structure. This bold move marks a significant evolution from its predecessors, catering to a wider consumer base seeking diverse electric vehicle options.
Hyundai has announced the availability of two primary battery/powertrain versions of the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric, the SE variant with a 48.6-kWh battery and the SEL variant that comes equipped with a 64.8-kWh battery. The launch of the EV in two different battery options showcase the South Korean manufacturer’s commitment to versatility and customer choice. While the previous electric model featuring only a 64-kWh battery pack and a 150-kW electric motor, the diversified lineup now includes varying battery capacities, providing prospective buyers with options aligning more precisely with their driving needs.
In spite of the introduction of a smaller battery option, the pricing strategy for the EV remains intriguing. Priced at $32,675 (excluding destination charge of $1,335), the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric SE is merely $875 less than its 2023 counterpart. It is quite surprising as the reduced battery capacity and corresponding reduction in driving range and power output should have brought the price of the vehicle considerably downs.
On the other hand, the SEL variant starts at $36,675, reflecting a 9.3 per cent increase compared to the outgoing bigger battery variant. With an additional “Limited” trim available at $41,045, the lineup offers a range of choices for prospective buyers, catering to their diverse preferences and budget considerations.
Beyond the pricing structure, the manufacturer has added significant enhancements in the 2024 Kona Electric's design and functionality. The enhanced generation of the Kona electric model boasts a more spacious cabin as well as a larger cargo area, offering a 33 per cent increase in space. Furthermore, an upgraded 10.8-kW on-board charger replaces the previous 7.2-kW version, promising quicker charging times.
Distinguished by a prolonged range of high-tech features, the SEL trim sets itself apart from the SE model. In addition to the existing offerings, it includes enhancements like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear privacy glass, and roof side rails, a driver's seat featuring two-way lumbar support for added comfort, heated front seats and rear air vents, which makes it an appealing option for anyone seeking elevated comfort and enhanced functionality.
