23-year-old mother found dead inside Gary home Friday

A 23-year-old young mother found dead inside a home on Friday has led to a probe by the Anderson Police Department.

Samantha Fleming's body was found at about 3pm at a home in the 1900 block of Cleveland. She had been stabbed and her death was ruled a homicide.

Police had come to Gary on Friday afternoon in search of the young mother and her newborn daughter who had been missing since early April. Fleming was reported missing April 10 by her boyfriend. He said that she was last seen with their infant daughter, Serenity, on April 6.

The 3-week-old infant who was in the care of a suspect's sister appeared to be fine and was taken to relatives in Indianapolis. Then she complained to investigators about a foul odor in the home, which led police to trace Fleming's body.

Anderson police said that Serenity left Anderson on April 5 with a woman who said she was from the Indiana Department of Child Services. She claimed Fleming had a hearing in Lake Superior Court.

According to police, the woman posed as a Child Protective Services worker and lured Fleming to Gary. The woman asked her sister to care for the infant. She appeared to have planned the killing and had filled her home with a crib, changing table, carrier and new clothes for a baby.

She had told family members that she was pregnant with twins. She also told them that one of the children died during delivery.

The alleged kidnapper is currently in a Texas hospital in the care of mental health professionals. Precautions are being made by police to make sure that she doesn't flee the hospital.
