Albanian premier's coalition needs ruling partner after poll win

Albanian premier's coalition needs ruling partner after poll win Tirana - The coalition led by Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha won a majority of votes in June's parliamentary elections but not enough to form a government alone, the electoral authority said Saturday.

Berisha's coalition won 70 seats in 140-seat parliament, head of the Central Election Commission Arben Ristani told reporters in Tirana.

The main opposition Socialist party led by Tirana's mayor Edi Rama won 66 seats in parliament, while its splinter LSI party won four seats.

Days after the June 28 elections, with no official results in sight, Berisha called on LSI president Illir Meta to join him in forming a government.

Ristani said the elections were "fair and honorable."

"The facts speak for themselves. This was the most transparent process we ever had. We need to have faith that it was an honest and fair process," Ristani said.

Albania was under intense pressure to organize fraud-free elections, which it has been unable to do since the fall of communist regime in 1990.

Socialists however denounced the elections results as unacceptable and called the voting process "a fraud". The Socialists have accused Berisha of interfering with the results, which the Berisha camp denies.(dpa)
