The Annual Terry Fox Run Scheduled For Sunday
Twenty-eight years ago, Terry Fox, in order to raise money for cancer research, undertook the ‘Marathon of Hope’ that saw him run / walk across Canada. With the annual Terry Fox Run scheduled to take place this Sunday, Daniel Landry, Chairman for this year’s run, emphasising the importance of recognizing efforts of the courageous one-legged runner, claimed Terry Fox was not only a great Canadian, but also one of the country’s heroes, and no one embodied the Canadian spirit better than he did.
Scheduled for Sunday, the Terry Fox Run will take place in the morning at Tony Rose Memorial Sports Complex in Orangeville and Shelburne Curling Club on O’Flynn Street in Shelburne, and the afternoon in the Moncton’s Centennial Park for Monction area residents.
Registration for Orangeville and Shelburne residents will take place at 8:30 a.m., with both runs getting underway at 9:00 am and winding up at 1:00 p.m. Residents of Orangeville area who require information, or wish to volunteer or make a donation, are requested to call Mr. Whitcombe at 519-941-9966. They can also visit the website at www.terryfoxrun.org. Shelburne area residents are requested to call and ask for Jill at 519-925-4382.
For Moncton area residents, registration will take place at noon at the park bandstand. The run or walk will begin at 1:00 p.m. Openings are still available for volunteers to man water stations on 1.5, 5 and 10-kilometre trails around the park. Pledge sheets are available at Mooser’s Pub and Norm’s Pizza in Dieppe, the Running Room, NuBody’s on Main Street, New Brunswick, Community College in Moncton, St. Pat’s Family Centre, Riverview Public Library and online at www.terryfoxrun.ca.
Any one can participate or make online donations at the two website addresses given above. An amazing model for all Canadians, Terry Fox battled cancer, lost a leg to it and went on to run to raise money for cancer research. Twenty-eight years of the annual Terry Fox Run has raised $400,000 to aid the ongoing fight against cancer. It is a great opportunity not only to raise money for the ongoing battle against cancer; it is also time to show your community spirit!
