Ban-ki Moon positive about extending term of UN Mission in Nepal

Kathmandu, Nov 3 : United Nations Secretary-General Ban-ki Moon and the UN Security Council are positive about extending the term of the UN Mission in Nepal, which is ending in January, 2008.

Ban-ki Moon and the UN Security Council were positive about extending the tenure of UN Mission in Nepal and have committed to extend all manner of support for it, said Ian Martin, the chief of the UN Mission in Nepal, who returned to Nepal on Friday after participating in the discussion on the recent report on Nepal tabled at the UN Security Council in New York.

“Secretary General Moon is very hopeful that the Nepalese peace process would bear fruit,” Nepalnews quoted Martin as saying.

“But, it is up to the Nepal government and the parties to decide on whether to extend UNMIN’s (the UN Mission in Nepal) tenure or not,” he added.

Martin said that he would immediately engage in discussions with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, including party leaders, to highlight the need to extend the UN Mission’s term. (ANI)
