BMW aims at higher sales in 2010The German luxury carmaker, BMW said that it is aiming at double-digit increase in sales in the 2010. The company expects growth in the high end segment in the country.

About 9,000 cars were sold in the luxury car segment in the country in 2009. This segment is to grow to 11,000 units this year and BMW wants to capatalise on this. The company holds 41% share in the luxury car segment.

BMW sold 3,690 units in 2009 and expects to increase it this year, expressed Peter Kronschnabl, President of BMW India.

He said that the company expects the segment to grow to over 20,000 cars by 2015 and he also described the segment as "highly competitive and very positive with even Tier II cities focusing on growth."

The company is looking at expanding its dealership network in the country from 12 at present to 22 dealerships by the end of 2010.

In another development, the company launched a limited edition of its Gran Turismo today. The vehicle comes with a price tag of Rs 63 lakh.

Only 100 units of Gran Turismo will be available in its limited edition. The car comes with a 3.01 litre diesel engine and it will be brought into the country through completely built unit (CBU) rout from BMW's plants.

The company has planned to invest $50 million in its Chennai plant to expand production capacity. The plant at present has a capacity of 3,000 units per year.

BMW said that group revenue fell 4.7% to €50.68 billion in 2009 while revenue in its core automobiles segment fell 10.3% to 43.74 billion.
