Bulgarian, Romania discuss further bridges on the Danube

Bulgarian & RomaniaSofia  - The transport ministers of Bulgaria and Romania met in the Bulgarian town of Ruse Monday for discussions on building a further two bridges over the Danube.

The two bridges being discussed by Bulgaria's Petar Mutafchiev and Romania's Ludovic Orban would be built following the planned 2010 completion of two already-planned bridges in around the Bulgarian town of Vidin and Romania's Calafat, the Bulgaria's BTA news agency reported.

At the meeting on the Danube border town, Mutafchiev and Orban also agreed on the modernization of the sole bridge that connects the two recently-joined European Union countries at Ruse and the nearby Romanian town of Giurgiu.

The ministers also announced a reduction in tolls, which currently amount to 8 euros (12.56 dollars) for Bulgarians and a somewhat higher amount for Romanians.

The ministers however rejected a total abolition of the toll the Ruse-Giurgiu bridge for which the inhabitants of the two cities have been campaigning. (dpa)
