Chelsea set up semi-final clash with Barcelona

Chelsea set up semi-final clash with Barcelona Hamburg - Chelsea suffered a serious fright against Liverpool Tuesday before eventually drawing 4-4 to set up a Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona, who progressed at the expense of Bayern Munich. Guus Hiddink's side went into the quarter-final match at Stamford Bridge holding a comfortable 3-1 lead from the first leg at Anfield but were stunned by a Fabio Aurelio free kick and Xabi Alonso penalty in the opening half hour.

However, a terrible fumble of a Didier Drogba flick from Jose Reina helped Chelsea pull one back on 51 minutes and Alex completed the comeback six minutes later with a ferocious longe-range free kick.

Frank Lampard tapped home to make it 3-2 for Chelsea 14 minutes from time but Lucas levelled for Liverpool five minutes later when his shot from outside the area came off Michael Essien to beat Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

Incredibly, Liverpool were back in front on 83 minutes when Dirk Kuyt headed home from six metres to set up a frantic finale but Lampard finally settled the home side's nerves with a strike two minutes from time to make it 4-4, a result that sees Chelsea go through 7-5 on aggregate.

In the night's other game, Barcelona, who were already all but assured of a place in the semi-final thanks to a 4-0 demolition of Bayern in the first-leg, played out a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena to progress 5-1 on aggregate.

Franck Ribery put the home side in front two minutes after the restart after latching on to a Ze Roberto pass but Seydou Keita ensured there would be no miracle comeback with Barca's equalizer 17 minutes from time.

On Wednesday, holders Manchester United visit Porto with the tie finely poised at 2-2 while Arsenal take on Villarreal in the other quarter-final at the Emirates having secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Spain.(dpa)
