Chidi’s Last-Minute Strike Stuns JCT
The numerous chances, which Edeh Chidi came across during the second half, swayed away as the striker hit the base of the post on-the-turn-kick. The promise however, was there through Mahindra United, from the fourth minute.
Nigerain was the one who won the moment of the match in Mumbai with the ninetieth minute goal. He got past JCT and made the final of the Durand Cup.
However, there was more to blame than just the law of averages for the champions of 1996. Sukhwinder Singh, the coach, could do nothing but lament over playing with the 10 players. He was particularly annoyed by Eduardo da Silva's performance. Singh said, “Apart from the free-kick, he had nothing to do. He didn’t involve himself at all. This reduced us to a 10-man side.”
During the second half, Mahindra United stuck to its formula, which was to stir it up, and Edeh Chidi and company did well for five to six goals. Immediate dividends were paid by the introduction of Paresh Shivalkar for Sushil Singh in the 69th minute by coach Derek Pereira.
On the other hand, Chidi kept on making efforts to make it form both sides. Singh said, “Our defense couldn’t play to their strength. We didn’t even try to stop them. They were at their best and we at our worst.”
