Coffee and carbs act as fuel after workouts
A report published in the Journal of Applied Physiology states that coffee refills the depleted levels of glycogen and also energizes the body to recover from injuries during workouts.
The researchers found that a combination of caffeine and carbohydrates athletes taken after exercise provides 66% more glycogen than caffeine alone.
The research was conducted in four sessions, wherein seven well-trained endurance cyclists were asked to ride a cycle ergometer until exhaustion, and then consume a low-carbohydrate dinner before going home. It was detected fours later that those who took the drink containing caffeine had 66 per cent higher glycogen levels in their muscles compared to those who had the carbohydrate-only drink.
Caffeine is present in beverages like tea, coffee, chocolate and cola drinks.
