Denmark looks to Princess Marie as Joachim ties the knot again

Denmark looks to Princess Marie as Joachim ties the knot againCopenhagen - Denmark's Prince Joachim entered into marriage for the second time Saturday, tying the knot with French-born Marie Cavallier at a small-town ceremony in the country's south.

Younger scions of Scandinavian royalty, including Sweden's 30- year-old Crown Princess Victoria and Norway's 34-year-old Crown Prince Haakon, were present for the nationally-televised ceremony.

But in contrast to Joachim's lavish first wedding in Copenhagen to Hong Kong-born Alexandra Manley, Saturday's affair was low-key, with guests limited to 300.

Copenhagen Bishop Erik Norman Svendsen, who in 2004 officiated at the wedding of Joachim's elder brother Crown Prince Frederik and Australian-born Mary Donaldson, took the ceremony at Mogeltonder church near Schakenborg Manor, where Joachim runs an estate.

The guests later attended a private banquet at the manor, the food prepared by members of the Danish national culinary team, of which Joachim is patron.

Like other foreign-born princesses, 32-year-old Cavallier assumed Danish citizenship on her wedding day.

Joachim, 38, divorced Princess Alexandra in April 2005, three years after the initial meeting with his new bride at a private shooting party in Denmark.

Those feelings started to blossom "sometime in the spring of 2005," the 38-year-old prince said last October on the announcement of their engagement.

Cavallier revives a French family link with the Danish royal house. Joachim's father, Prince Henrik, was born in France as Henri Marie Jean André Count de Laborde de Monpezat, and married Queen Margrethe in 1967.

In a recent interview, the bride now known as Her Royal Highness Princess Marie said she felt a little embarassed over not being able to speak Danish yet, but hoped that living in Denmark would help.

Princess Alexandra, who has since remarried while retaining joint custody with Joachim of their sons Nikolai and Felix, charmed Danes with her ability to master the language in a short period.

Cavallier is said to get on well with the two boys - who were on hand for Saturday's ceremony - while declaring her intention not to come between them and their mother. (dpa)
