Flawless 100-carat diamond sold for $22M at Sotheby's auction in New York
A very large diamond attracted a lot of people and mesmerized them with its flawless cut. At a Sotheby's auction in New York, it was sold for $22 million. It is a 100-carat, D color, emerald cut internally flawless diamond and is the largest of its clarity and cut and also the first of its kind to be displayed at auction.
Gary Schuler, the head of Sotheby's jewelry department in New York, said before the sale of the diamond, "People everywhere have been drawn to it from across the room and they are in awe of its size, particularly when they put it on their hand. They can't believe there's a diamond this pure of such impressive scale".
According to Sotheby's, just six flawless diamonds, which were more than 100 carats, have ever been sold at auction, together with the one that was sold on Tuesday. The other diamonds which were sold included an oval diamond of 118.28 carat sold for $30.6 million at a Sotheby's Hong Kong auction in 2013, and it is a record for a white diamond.
The huge diamond was the main attraction at the house's Magnificent Jewels auction, in which a collection of Kashmir sapphire jewelry and many Art Deco pieces from Cartier were included. The complete collection, which consisted of over 350 pieces, generated over $65 million. It is a record for a jewelry auction at Sotheby's New York.
Schuler said the impact of private collectors during the day was a great thing to see, together with the highest end of sale i. e. eight of their top 10 pieces were acquired by private individuals. He said that online buyers made heavy purchases and contributed a lot to the final total.
