Floods impacted Kenyan operations, says Tata ChemicalsWhile chairing the 73 annual general meeting (AGM) of his group firm, Tata Chemicals, He said that the company's operations in Kenya were affected by flooding during the first quarter of 2012-13.

The company's facilities in Magadi, Kenya were affected by flooding in the African nations. He pointed out that foreign exchange fluctuations and a slowdown in production at Haldia West Bengal also impacted the earnings.

The company had to halt the production of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) at Haldia as it faced a severe shortage of phosphoric acid. Mr. Tata expressed optimism and said that the problems are now behind the company and not it is looking to turn around its soda ash operations in Kunya and stabilize its facilities in Haldia West Bengal.

MR. Tata pointed out that the demand for soda ash in the global markets has increased 6 per cent due to an increase in BRICS countries as well as from eth global glass industry. "The production of soda ash has increased globally. However, there are imbalances with overproduction in China and shortage in other countries," he said.

Mr. Tata informed the shareholders of the company that Tata Chemicals had a 64 per cent share in the Indian packaged salt market.
