Four confirmed dead after tornado hits boy scout camp
Washington - A tornado destroyed a Boy Scout camp in western Iowa Wednesday killing four scouts and injuring dozens more.
The camp is located about half-way between Sioux City, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska.
Arli Hasbrouck, a spokesperson for the Boy Scouts of America's Mid-American Council in Omaha, confirmed that four scouts were killed in the tornado, Iowa newspaper the Des Moines Register reported. Hasbrouck did not know how many people were injured.
"That's all we know at this point," Hasbrouck said. "We've got lots of scouters on their way to help."
As rescue workers were still busy looking after surviors, CNN reported that 123 people, including adult supervisors were at the remote camp. The scouts, aged 14 to 18, were at the Little Sioux Scout Reservation for a week-long leadership training.
Reports said that the scouts were camping in tents all of which were destroyed.
The National Weather Service in Omaha, said the tornado went through the area at about 1135 GMT about 12 minutes after a warning sounded. (dpa)
