New blue-light technique to improve bladder tumour detection

New blue-light technique to improve bladder tumour detectionWashington, Apr 27: Mayo Clinic researchers have come up with a novel diagnostic tool that not only helps detect bladder tumours but will substantially reduce the rate at which these cancers come back.

They claim that the new technique helped found more of the most common bladder tumours than the traditional white-light detection method in almost 17 percent of the patients.

It also demonstrated a 22 percent relative reduction in the recurrence rate within nine months of the procedure.

Prostate cancer therapy ‘ups risk of bone, heart-related problems’

Prostate cancer therapy ‘ups risk of bone, heart-related problems’Washington, Apr 27: Prostate cancer patients who undergo therapy to increase testosterone levels are more likely to suffer from bone- and heart-related problems, says a new study.

The research team, led by Lockwood Taylor, MPH, of the University of Texas Health Science Centre, revealed that androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) used to increase testosterone levels can cause a variety of side effects including skeletal and cardiovascular complications, sexual dysfunction, periodontal disease, and mood disorders.

Novel method to identify early-stage lung cancer

Novel method to identify early-stage lung cancerWashington, Apr 24: By using a computer-aided detection (CAD) method, radiologists could identify cancerous lung nodules at an early stage, a new study has claimed.

Performed at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD, the study could boost the chances of survival among cancer patients.

“In our study we identified 88 nodules that were not detected at the time of interpretation but visible in retrospect and were subsequently determined to be lung cancers,” said Joseph Jen-Sho Chen, MD, lead author of the study.

Pregnancy hormone offers protection against breast cancer

Pregnancy hormone offers protection against breast cancerWashington, Apr 21: Researchers from Fox Chase Cancer Centre have found that pregnancy hormone hCG protects against breast cancer even in short-term treatments.

Lead researcher Dr Johana Vanegas showed that presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced by the placenta to maintain the early stages of pregnancy offers protection against breast cancer.

She said that even a much shorter exposure to hCG could prevent breast cancer in rats.

Personalised cancer treatment comes closer to reality

Personalised cancer treatment comes closer to realityLondon, Apr 20: Researchers have taken a step forward to bringing personalized cancer therapy within reach by using molecular profiling of the patients that can help identify specific treatments.

The study shows that molecular profiling of patients can identify specific treatments for individuals, helping keep their cancer in check for significantly longer periods, and in some cases even shrinking tumours.

During the research, the team recruited 66 patients at nine centres across the United States, including Scottsdale Heathcare.

Novel drug shows promise in treating drug-resistant prostate cancer

Novel drug shows promise in treating drug-resistant prostate cancerWashington, April 8: An experimental drug for metastatic prostate cancer has shown considerable promise in early clinical trials by reducing signs of the disease in patients with drug-resistant cancer.

Of 30 men who received low doses of one the drugs in a multisite phase I/II trial designed to evaluate safety, 22 showed a sustained decline in the level of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in their blood.
