A Hawaii woman died after a shark attack off the coast of Maui Wednesday morning. The incident prompted officials to close beaches and a section of the ocean that involves a popular surfing spot.

According to the Maui Fire Department, the woman was pulled from the water by Snorkelers when her body was found floating face-down in the water just before 9 am. According to officials, the injuries are consistent with a shark attack.

The 65-year-old woman was identified a resident of Kihei, up the coast about 12 miles from where her body was found. According to authorities, the woman was snorkeling with two friends and they were separated after few minutes. But at the time body was found, she was alone.

Her injuries on her upper torso suggest that she was attacked by a shark. As per the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), fatalities from shark attacks are uncommon and this is first death reported this year.

In 2014, the US saw 52 shark attacks than 47 in 2013, as per the Florida Museum of Natural History. Last year, no fatalities were reported in the US. The DLNR said that beaches and the ocean from the reserve to Makena State Park to the north, involving surf spot known as 'The Dumps' were closed until noon Friday.

According to the DLNR, until Wednesday there has been confirmation of only three fatal shark attacks in Hawaii waters since 1995 and all three took place off the coast of Maui. On December 2, 2013, fisherman Patrick Brinley was killed by an unknown species of shark when he was fishing from a kayak off the coast of Makena.
