Indian border guard accused of gunning down three Bangladeshis

Dhaka - An Indian boarder guard Sunday night shot down three Bangladesh nationals in a remote village of the country's northern frontier district of Panchagarh, local media reported Monday.

Officials at the Bangladesh Rifles headquarters in Dhaka said that the Border Security Force of India killed the three innocent villagers, including an infant and her mother.

They said villagers captured a member of the Indian guard after the firing incident in the dead of night. The BSF man was reported to be drunk.

The BSF member in uniform intruded into Bangladesh territory and opened fire indiscriminately as villagers intercepted him at Majhipara village bordering with Indian state of West Bengal, according to The Daily Star newspaper, quoting the officer in charge of local police station, Taherul Islam.

He said that the Indian guard's bullets tore down the shanty house of Shahidul Islam, killing his 2-year-old boy and his wife, both of whom were asleep in the thatched hut at that time.

Bangladesh forces intensified vigilance on the frontiers after the killings.

The killing of civilians by Indian guards happens frequently in the areas bordering with India, according to Bangladeshi officials.

The Bangladesh government has repeatedly requested that Indian authorities ask its border forces to stop such killings and violations of human rights.

The two countries shares over 4,000 kilometres of land border. (dpa)
