Katie the giraffe gives birth to a calf, people watch live on Internet

On Friday evening, Katie the giraffe gave birth to a calf at the Dallas Zoo. The 7-year-old gave birth to her newest calf when tens of thousands of people were watching her. Katie's labor was broadcasted live online by cable television channel Animal Planet.

According to reports, the baby, which was born at about 6 pm, has not been named yet. The calf's gender was also not revealed. The Dallas Zoo has 12 giraffes and Katie is one of them. When Katie was giving birth to her baby, some members of the group were standing nearby her.

Katie, who came to Dallas in 2010 from the Fort Worth Zoo, is also the mother of 4-year-old Jamie. While confirming the birth, Katie's main trainer, Allison Dean, said that the giraffe is very good at communicating with her about how she is feeling.

To broadcast the calf's birth live online, the Animal Planet teamed up with the zoo. They had placed about 10 cameras inside the maternity ward of the zoo to capture every single moment. Soon, when the cable television channel started broadcasting the birth live, it became a trending topic on social media, which drew over 1.5 million viewers.

While providing information about the new calf's birth, Animal Planet said, "Giraffes give birth standing up, and the baby's fall helps break the amniotic sac, sever the umbilical cord and encourage the calf to take its first breaths".

As per the reports, Katie started cleaning her calf right after it was born. The baby calf took its first wobbly steps about an hour after the birth and after some failed attempts. According to Animal Planet, Katie has a reputation for being extremely friendly. She usually loves to greet guests at the feed yard, as per the channel.
