Shipping ministry had announced to transform the lighthouses which are under ‘no-go zones’ into tourist attractions. Many lighthouses across the country are going through their worse period but shipping ministry has decided to renovate these lighthouses.

To accomplish this plan, Union shipping minister G K Vasan on Saturday announced the launch of lighthouse tourism project with a budget of Rs 300 crore. It is expected that the project will be implemented in three years.

There are around 13 lighthouses which are kept out of the public reach and now this project will aim in promoting these lighthouses into tourist spots. All the 13 lighthouses are located in picturesque places along the coastline of the country.

The minister has announced that during first phase, national heritage maritime museum at Mahabalipuram will be build at the cost of Rs 50 crore and a lighthouse museum on the Marina at a cost of about Rs 5 crore will undergo renovation.
